Understanding Hooke's Law: The Foundation of Elasticity| Chapter 5 Physics 9th

HOOKE'S LAW   Introduction In physics, Hooke's Law is one of the fundamental principles governing how objects deform under external forces . Named after the 17th-century British physicist Robert Hooke, this law provides a crucial understanding of the behavior of elastic materials, such as springs and rubber bands. Whether stretching a rubber band or compressing a spring, Hooke's Law helps explain what happens when forces act on these materials. What is Hooke's Law: Hooke's Law states that the force F needed to extend or compress a spring by some distance x is proportional to that distance. Mathematically, it is expressed as: F= -kx Here k represents the spring constant, which is the measure of the stiffness of the spring, and x is the displacement from the displacement position.  The negative sign indicates that the force exerted by the spring is in the opposite direction of the displacement.  Understanding the Spring Constant: The spring constant k is a critical co...

Ø ABOUT THE POETESS:

This poem is written by Felicia Dorothea Hemans (1793-1835). She was born at Liverpool but brought up at Wales. Her poetic style can be compared with Long Fellow’s poetic style.

Ø ABOUT THE POEM:

The poem is full of imagination and sound. The poetess tried to evoke the sensory experiences. The boy is shouting out for his father throughout the poem. As he did not believe that his father is dead. He has a strong faith in his father and when the ship exploded with the boom poetess added an image of wind carrying the debris of the ship and the gallant child. She said that the noblest thing that perished there was a faithful heart.

The language used here is narrative. The poetess was feeling sorrow over the boy’s death, so the tone of the poem is also sorrowful sighs.

Ø SUMMARY OF CASABIANCA:

The poem starts with image of the young boys’ lonely on the flaming deck. All men ran away in order to save their lives and the flames are surrounding him. The boy Casabianca was the son of the captain stood boldly and bravely as his father ordered him to stand here. It looks that he is the creature of the heroic blood, although he was a little boy.

The flames were surrounding fast, but he did not escape without his father’s permission. He was not able to hear the voice of his father anymore and he did not want to believe that his father had died.

He was calling him loudly so that he could not know that his task was done or not. But he did not know that the chief of the ship is unconscious of his son, whom he assigned a duty at the deck. He cried again and asked if he could leave the deck, as the flames were moving fast toward him, but he could not find an answer. He was feeling the heat of the fire on his brows and hairs, but he still was standing on the deck bravely and despair.

Once again he shouted loud and asked his father to stand at the deck. The flames of the fire covered him the sail and the rope was also burning fast. The whole ship was on fire and the flag which was too high got the fire.

Then the ship got busted with a thunder sound. The poetess expressed her sorrow in one line;

                        “The boy. Oh! Where was he?”

The ship and the boy disappeared and sea was covered with the broken pieces of ship and certainly the parts of the boy’s body also. The wind was carrying the ashes and the particles also. But the poetess considerately saying that, the noblest thing which was destroyed here was the young faithful heart of the boy.

Center of Mass or Center of Gravity and Couple | 9th Physics

 Center of Mass or Center of Gravity A body behaves as if its all mass is concentrated at one point called as Center of Mass or Center of Gravity. Even though earth attract every part of it.  Below figure shows center of masses of different shapes. Center of Mass of Irregular Shapes: In case of regular shapes it is easier to find the center of mass because of their structure, but can we find the center of mass of an irregular shape? Yes we can. Following are some steps to find the center of mass of the irregular shapes: Step 01: Make small holes on the edges of the irregular shapes.  Step 02: Suspend the irregular shape one whole retord stand. Step 03: Hung a plumb line or weight from the pin in front of irregular shape. Step 04: When plumb line is steady, trace the line on the irregular shape. Step 05: Repeat step 2-4 for second and third hole.   Couple: A couple is formed by two unlike forces of same magnitude but opposite in direction.  The torque produc...
