Eliza Cook (1818-1889)

The poem is
narrative one as it is about the story of King Robert Bruce, Crowned King of
Scotland, who was made an outlaw in his country by Edward I, King of England
and one who had defeated Robert Bruce. In this poem Robert learns a lesson of persistent
struggle by a little spider that succeed in tenth attempt to reach his cobweb.
The mood in this poem is serious and desperate one, while the last two stanzas
are rhyming. The theme also goes change with the success of the spider and the
tone got changed from desperate to hopeful one.

In this poem
the poetess presented a real motive of life. In her point of view, continuous struggle
is a way to lead a successful life. This poem tells the story of King Bruce of
the Scotland. When he was defeated and have to take refuges in a cave, he was
very sad on his failures. One day when he was convinced of his defeat he saw a
spider who was trying to reach to her cobweb. It fell down and climbed many
times but could not succeed. Finally, the spider succeed in climbing her cobweb
in tenth attempt. King Bruce became energetic to see spider’s struggle to reach
its cobweb. He said optimistically, “All honor to those who try persistently”. King Bruce then finally attacked again and
succeed.
