Ellen M.H. Gates (1835-1920) was born in Torrington,
Connecticut (USA). Her poems "The Home of The Soul' and
"Eternity" are famous for their religious theme.
ABOUT THE POEM
The poem has four stanzas in it each having four couplets in
it. The rhyming scheme in this poem is abcbdefe' where every last word of
second verse rhymes with the last word of fourth verse and the last word of
sixth and eighth verse rhymes and this is repeated in all stanzas. The theme of
the poem is explicit as the title and the theme is nearly the same i.e. both
show that the poetry is about the beautiful hands. Anyone reading this poem can
judge easily that whose hands the poetess is referring to. In the last line of
the poem, the poetess clearly says that she will clasp her mother's hand, so
there is nothing implicit in it. The mood throughout the poem is serious,
appreciating and also predicting one. The tone. of the poem is as if it is
sighing with a fear of losing something valuable and also appreciating one.
This shows that poetess is in fear of losing her mother and she tries o express
her value in her life.
SUMMARY
In this poem, the poetess praising her mother's hands which
revealed her love for her mother. She says that although her mother's hands are
not beautiful, they are appealing for her. With the passage of time, her mother
has grown old and now her hands have become feeble and full of wrinkles. These
hands can be a dream of a sculptor who can visualize the beauty of the hands of
a mother. These hands are dearer to her as these hands worked tirelessly to
protect her children and to provide them the enjoyments of life. The poetess is
feeling very sorry, when a childhood memory came into her mind. That memory
reminded her of the working of the never resting hands of her mother, while she
was playing games with her siblings. One cannot pay his or her mother for the
care she takes in bringing her children up. The only thing one can do is to
take care of them in their old age. The poetess is too much anxious when she
thinks of her mother's ending life. It is difficult for poetess to live without
her but she also hopes that these hands should be rewarded with victory as God
will bless her when she will reach again get a chance of clapping these hands.
